Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, in Rockville, provides emergency center care to more than 150,000 patients per year. At the ER, their skilled emergency care services include expert cardiologists and 24 hour access to imaging and lab services as well as specialized pediatric emergency care. The hospital has the first and most experienced Pediatric Emergency Department in Montgomery County. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit opened in 1996.

The hospital offers acute hospital care, rehabilitation, mental and behavioral health services, home care, and wellness services. It employs over 6,000 employees and have 331 beds.  It has a Level 3 NICU.  

The most common procedures and conditions treated at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital are abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, COPD, colon cancer, heart failure, hip and knee replacements, and lung cancer. 

This hospital has a B grade from Leapfrog which seems about right to our medical malpractice lawyers.  It is not a bad hospital by any means. (The hospital apparently did a pretty good job during the height of COVID.) But it is not an exceptional hospital in a state that has many exceptional hospitals.

• 2006, Maryland: $3,202,700 Verdict. A woman goes to Laurel Regional Hospital with shortness of breath and three days later she is transferred to Washington Adventist Hospital for a cardiac evaluation. The doctor finds coronary artery disease and pulmonary hypertension and recommends that she has cardiac bypass. This surgery is performed while her heart is still beating, without a heart-lung machine. After the procedure, the doctor orders a routine chest x-ray that reveals that the catheter is in an improper location. The doctor adjusts it, waits a few moments, and then adjusts it again. After this, the woman has bright red blood coming from a tube, causing the doctor to believe she is suffering from a pulmonary artery rupture. He then calls the anesthesiologist who places a tube, and then he prescribes medication to reduce her blood pressure. The doctor states that he informed the doctor who performed the bypass of the issue, but he was away from the hospital. He is unsuccessful in locating the origin of the bleeding, but the physician states that the patient’s bleeding spontaneously stopped. Three days later, she leaves the ICU after x-rays reveal no indication of continued bleeding. She takes medication for pain and to prevent blood clots (Plavix and Lovenox). She had not received aspirin since a day after the incident, and she subsequently begins coughing up a significant amount of blood, becomes pale, and has a drop in blood pressure. This leads to her death. Her estate alleges that the examinations during the operation and after were negligent, and further that the doctor’s administered the wrong medications. The defendants argue they were not negligent and that the woman was contributorily negligent. A jury awards the woman’s estate $3,202,700.
