Background
Located in Cumberland, Maryland in Allegany County, Western Maryland Regional Medical Center serves as the designated Areawide Trauma Center. It is part of the Western Maryland Health System, which also has several outpatient centers with over 200 physicians.
Western Maryland Health System opened a Heart Institute in 2000, which provides comprehensive cardiac services. In November 2009, a new hospital in Cumberland opened that combined all of the services at Western Maryland Regional Medical Center into one seven-story facility with 275 beds.

In 2016, the hospital was recognized as one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals for Cardiac Surgery by Healthgrades with a five-star rating. This five-star rating means that the clinical outcomes statistically are better than expected for patients with specific conditions. For three years, the hospital received a five-star rating for coronary bypass surgeries, pacemaker procedures, and total knee replacements.

Western Maryland Health System has two primary care centers in Maryland – one is located in LaVale and the other is located in Cumberland. Additionally, they have two urgent care centers. These are located in Frostburg, Maryland and Short Gap, West Virginia.
In 2013, Meritus Health, Frederick Regional Health System, and Western Maryland Health System agreed to form a partnership. This partnership would allow them to share information and increase the number of medical experts available while reducing costs.
